Thrissur: The great poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri has passed away at the age of 94. He was admitted to a private hospital in Thrissur on Monday due to health issues. The death occurred at 8.10am on Thursday.
In a long poetic career of eighty years, he has authored over fifty works, including poetry, short stories, plays, translations and essays. He was born on March 18, 1926 in Akkitham Mana, Amatur as the son of Vasudevan Namboothiri and Chekoor Manakkal Parvati Antharjanam.
He has been active in the national movement and the activities of the Yogakshema Sabha and he had been a part of Akashavani for several years.
His brother Akkitham Narayanan and his son Akkitham Vasudevan are painters. He was honoured with Jnanpith award (2019), Padma Shri (2017), Vayalar Award (2012), Ezhuthachan Award (2008), Odakkuzhal Award (1974) and the Kerala and Kendra Sahitya Akademi Awards in 1972 and 1973.
