As Tamil Nadu is waiting for assembly elections in 2021, the rift between two factions of the ruling party AIADMK is widing further. Even after O Panneerselvam called a high-level committee meeting at the AIADMK headquarters on Friday, the differences between the factions EPS and OPS couldn’t be resolved.
OPS demanded for an eleven member steering committee to take all the party decisions and the post of party general secretary, a post which was abolished during the merger of the EPS-OPS factions. Several ministers pointed out the dominance of two castes (Gounders and Thevars) in the cabinet and demanded equal representation for others.E Palanisawmi camp has said that if a steering committee is formed, it would lead to several other problems as each member will have a different opinion and the indecisiveness would hurt the party ahead of elections.
An executive committee meeting has called by EPS and OPS on September 28 to address these issues again.
