Mumbai: To increase domestic manufacturing, the Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a notification confirming India’s ban on the import of air conditioners on Thursday. The ban is said to be part of the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign to promote local manufacturers.

The import of split AC system and other air conditioners with refrigerants have moved from “free” to “prohibited” category. The companies such as Mitsubishi and Toshiba will suffer from this ban when Voltas, Havells and Bluestar will only have minimal benefits. The ban will be beneficial for contract makers as most of the multinational companies purchase parts from other countries.
