Madras High Court granted a 30-day parole to one of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts, AG Perarivalan on health grounds today. Perarivalan and six others have been serving sentence for more than 29 years in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
Perarivalan’s mother, Arputhammal made a plea for a parole of 90 days for her son as he needs immediate medical attention due to various ailments.
But the state government rejected the habeas corpus plea as he was found ineligible for such leave under the prison rules. A division bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice P Velmurugan directed the state to grant parole to Perarivalan as “he is suffering from multiple comorbidities and he is prone to contract Covid-19 in the prison without proper medical care”.
