Chinese Minister of Civil Affairs Li Jiheng expressed caution as China’s total fertility rate has fallen below the warning line. The rate of population growth has entered a critical turning point and the country’s population will soon start to decline. With a rapidly ageing population, China is facing a demographic crisis.
Demographers call on the government to immediately lift restrictions on having babies and be more tolerant toward babies born out of wedlock. The crisis is do high that the authorities should consider doing more to lower the costs of raising and educating children.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics the number of births was down 580,000 compared with the previous year.
